The Bask Country offers
a varied geography. The contrast born of the marriage between the mountain
and the ocean constitutes one of its characteristics.
A regular hygroscopy associated with soft temperatures
maintain a vegetation luxuriante throughout the year.
Intense grubbing and the secular and
traditional breeding reduced the forests which, during centuries, covered
about two thirds of the Country northern Basque. Successive regression of
this thick forest with, since, left room to the moor.
Composed of gorses, brooms, heathers, the moor differs
from color and thickness according to the type of ground and exposure. It
supports the growth of graminaceous which constitutes
the food of the cattle in winter.
At side of the moors, the pastures of
high soule form the vast wide ones of grass green and fatty which accomodate
immense herds at the season.
